Abstract

This study aims to analyze the export performances of Bitlis and Van provinces located in the east of Türkiye between 2004-2024, especially in terms of geographical concentration. Within the scope of the study, the potential effects of diversification of exports and the decrease in regional concentration on economic growth and the contribution to the reduction of vulnerabilities were evaluated.

In the analyses, the Concentration Ratio (CR) and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Concentration Index (HHI) were used based on the export data of Bitlis and Van provinces. In the case of Van province, while the high share of exports to Iran in total exports draws attention, an increase in the number of countries and regions to which exports are made in Bitlis province has been observed over time. This situation reveals that Bitlis has followed a more positive course in terms of diversifying its export markets.

The findings show that Van province's exports show a high level of geographical concentration; on the other hand, Bitlis province's export structure has evolved into a more balanced and diversified structure over time. In this context, it is suggested that both provinces should increase market diversity, develop strategies to expand to new foreign markets and strengthen their logistics infrastructure in order to make their export structures more resilient and sustainable.
