EXAMINING THE ACTIVITIES IN THE 6TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES TEXTBOOK IN TERMS OF SKILLS IN THE SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM

In this study, it is aimed to examine the activities in the 6th grade Social Studies textbook in terms
of the skills determined in the learning areas of the Social Studies Curriculum. The research was
carried out using the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research
methods. The sample of the study consists of the 6th grade Social Studies textbook and the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum, distributed free of charge to be taught in secondary schools in the 2020-
2021 academic year, with the decision of the Ministry of National Education, Board of Education
and Discipline. The items in the data collection tools were created according to the criterion
sampling, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The data were subjected to descriptive
analysis. In the research, the highlighted skills for each learning area in the Social Studies
Curriculum were determined and the sub-dimensions of these skills were created. The activities in
the learning areas of the Social Studies textbook were analyzed according to these determined
skills. In line with the data obtained, the activities in the learning areas in the textbook were
analyzed in terms of the skills and sub-dimensions of the skills determined and presented in tables
by quantifying them. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that there are imbalances in the
distribution of the skills emphasized in the learning areas in the Social Studies Curriculum in terms
of activities in the 6th grade Social Studies textbook. Although determined skills are identifed in
some learning areas, it has not been detected in some of the learning areas in no away. In this study,
it can be suggested that the activities in Social Studies textbooks should be included in the desired
level while preparing the activities and the activities should be prepared in a way to gain all subdimensions of the skills.
