Nurullah Ataç is one of the important names of Turkish literature in the Republic period. Ataç is
also at the center of discussions in the history of the Turkish language, especially with the use of
new words and inverted sentences in his essays and journals. Ataç has been evaluated from many
aspects, as his literary personality, understanding of language, criticism in the history of Turkish
language and literature. In this study, the equivalents used by Ataç for borrowing words in his
journal type writings are focused on. The equivalents used by the author for borrowing words in his
journals of 1956 were discussed in terms of their appearances in the Current Turkish Dictionary. It is seen that the words that Ataç uses for borrowing from Eastern and Western languages are
mostly derivative words in the context of their structural features. It has been observed that the new
words were mostly composed for borrowings from Eastern languages. The words determined were
also discussed in the context of lexicalization and lexicalization stages. The words determined in the
diaries were evaluated as a new element (neologism) in the context of lexicalization stages. The
status of the new elements that are determined to complete the institutionalisation stage and turn
into a lexeme is examined. At the end of the analysis, it was seen that approximately half of the
words determined turned into lexeme.
