THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER AND EARLY ADAPTIVE SCHEMAS: A REVIEW

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between OCD and early maladaptive schemas.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a brain disease that causes distress in individuals' lives, causes
loss of ability, and obsessions and compulsions are often observed together, but the presence of one
is sufficient to make a diagnosis. Understanding the etiological factors underlying OCD reveals the
necessity of a comprehensive evaluation and the adoption of a cognitive-based approach. In this
context, a perspective focusing on the cognitive origins of OCD draws attention to the role of early
maladaptive schemas. Early maladaptive schemas stand out as fundamental beliefs that are based on
negative experiences in childhood and contribute to the development of OCD symptoms by
affecting the individual's cognitive and emotional functioning. Within the framework of the sources
available in the literature, it is seen that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and early maladaptive
schemas and schema modes are related to each other. It is clearly understood that. Implementation
of the recommendations suggested by the study, such as individualized treatment strategies, schema
therapy integration, early intervention and support groups, may contribute to a more effective
management of the relationship between OCD and early maladaptive schemas.
