Abstract

Space is the living environment where the different needs of all living beings are met. Emotions are a mental event that exists in humans. Emotions formed in the mind turn into perceptions through certain processes. While spaces create various effects in the human mind with senses, emotions can shape spaces. The perception of emotions through spaces changes according to the physical, spiritual and social conditions of people. Novels are a type of writing in which fictional events are conveyed to the reader through spaces. In a novel, the space can be an artificial, natural and mixed space, or it can be arranged with a plot where three spaces are used together, as in the novel “Kuyucaklı Yusuf”. In this important work, Sabahattin Ali conveyed to the reader the emotions that Yusuf felt in all the events he experienced by using all three spaces by describing the spaces. Many emotions were perceived through spaces, and the events were understood. The aim of this study is to determine the emotions that the perception of space makes people feel through the novel “Kuyucaklı Yusuf” and to emphasize how important narrative spaces are in the story structure. In the study, all the spaces and characters in the novel were listed and a comparative analysis of the narrative perceptions of the spaces created with descriptions and the emotions intended to be given was made. In the light of all this data, it was concluded that there was a balance of positive and negative emotions in the novel. This literary work is an important example of the fact that the main emotion of the novel can be determined through the perception of narrative space in novels.
