Abstract

Madness is a phenomenon that has been named differently in different cultures. Delusions of
insanity, which are often regarded as part of an ancient ritual, were sometimes regarded as a disease
requiring closure. It is also witnessed that the concept of insanity is represented in different ways in
many different branches of art. Many different works of art, from cinema to literature, from music
to painting, have become witnesses of the different act of perception and interpretation that is called
madness Madness, whose existence was not taken seriously from ancient times until the
Renaissance, came across with the term discipline as a concept belonging to reason in the periods
when rationalism gained importance. At this point, insanity that results in exclusion and
marginalization is a grave disease that must be dealt with. Individuals who are not normal in the
normative framework have started to be isolated from the society with the big closure-confinement
mentioned by Foucault, who is one of the important thinkers of the twentieth century. Accordingly,
the realist and materialistic insanity contrary to reason has been condemned to be closed under one
roof. The aim of this study is to make a critical film reading of One Flew Over The Cuckcoo’s Nest,
using Foucault's themes on the relationship between power and madness.
