Abstract

The research, which was carried out to determine the visual effects arising from the interaction of
the design materials used in the stage design with light, also aims to observe the results to be
obtained by applying them to the surfaces of different materials. This research used qualitative
research methods as applied research in the case study model and was prepared for the purpose of
collecting data on the post-dramatic physical stage performance named "Pygmalion" staged in the
state theatre. The results of the research are important to provide more understanding of the
relationship between design materials and light.
The stage designer used transparent, translucent and opaque materials in the decor and costume
materials. As costume material, organic and synthetic fabrics were preferred and materials with
glossy-matt and rough-smooth surfaces were used.
Data were obtained with photographs made under white light and eight different coloured stage
lights. The structural features and surface structures of the design materials reflected different visual
results with the effect of different coloured lights. The visual effect is perceived as brightness,
opacity and light reflections.
Lights of different colours had an effect on the colour reflected from the objects and caused the
objects to appear in different colours. The designer must have knowledge of light and materials in
order to use the visual effect formed by the relationship between stage design and material
consciously. This information is important in terms of providing the desired visual effect and
providing flexibility in the variety of materials.
