A REVIEW ON BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER AND TREATMENT PROCESS IN PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH

Abstract

            The Personality functioning and psychodynamic conflicts are central constructs in psychoanalytic theories of psychopathology and in many psychodynamic treatment models. Many studies show that psychodynamic therapy is effective in combination with medication in the treatment of personality disorders. Personality disorders (PD) are a major burden on health resources and this is particularly true for borderline borderline personality disorder (BPD). Personality disorders are mental disorders characterised by persistent, stereotyped and stubborn ways of thinking and attitudes. Stubborn thought and behaviour patterns that do not show flexibility lead to destructive effects, functional impairments and subjective discomfort in the work life of individuals with personality disorders and in their relationships with other people. People with borderline borderline personality disorder have problems in self-control mechanisms and instability in their thoughts and behaviours. Self-harm behaviours, suicide attempts, eating disorders or substance use disorders are often added to the clinical picture. The aetiology of BPD is related to both genetic factors and adverse childhood experiences such as sexual and physical abuse. Like all personality disorders, BPD emerges during adolescence or young adulthood. Therefore, it is important to detect the presence of personality disorder in its early stages to initiate appropriate treatment. In this review study, in line with the findings obtained in the literature review, we will examine borderline personality disorder with a psychodynamic perspective and the treatment process in relation to existing researches based on pubmed, scholar data.
