Abstract

Leisure time perceptions, practices and patterns of using their leisure time is very significant in terms of their self
actualization, personal and social developments and the future of our country in general. In this context, we try to
measure university students’ patterns and tendencies of using the leisure time according to gender with the case of
Namık Kemal University in Tekirdağ. We use the quantitative method and survey technique in our study. The sample of
our study consists of 230 students, 120 of whom are female and 110 of whom are male students in the main campus of
the university. We chose the random sampling method in our survey study and this study is based on the result of this
questionnaires and other observations in the field. According to findings of our research, university students said that
there have been significant changes in their leisure time practices and they feel themselves more free in their leisure
time activities after they begin to university education. They are tended to make use of their leisure time by chatting
together, and participations various entertaining occasions. They usually prefer their congenerics in terms of gender in
common activities. The most favorite places they choose are canteens, cafes and open areas like seaside. Female
students prefer these places more than the male ones. Furthermore, they rarely prefer making a research on a specific
topic, or participating cultural, artistic and sportive activites.
