Abstract

The concept of identity, which refers to all the qualities and characteristics of individuals and societies, is a multifaceted phenomenon and is suitable to be analyzed from different aspects. From a sociolinguistic perspective, language is one of the characteristics of individuals and societies and plays an important role in constructing, maintaining or changing identities. Through language, individuals and societies take part in activities such as expressing themselves in different ways, establishing relations with other individuals or social groups and imposing their identities on them or adopting their identity characteristics. With this feature, the relationship between language and identity is not static but dynamic and multifaceted. In this article, aspects of this multifaceted relationship that are considered to be of major importance such as gender, faith, nationality, migration and social media are discussed from individual and social perspectives. Understanding the relationship between language and identity is important not only for understanding identity dynamics at the individual and societal level, but also for developing more inclusive policies and practices that support cultural diversity.
